C.H. Tien

Associate Director RMA

Tien is a training consultant in the area of organisational development, which also includes leadership, team development as well as training of trainers, salesmanship, public speaking and making powerful presentations.

For the past 19 years, he has facilitated training through the use of experiential learning and challenge ropes courses. He builds ropes courses and currently owns such a facility. Largely self-taught and hands-on, he holds a Diploma in Training and Development Management (SIM) and a Diploma in Education (Sheffield) with distinction. Among many personal enrichment seminars and courses attended were ropes course facilitation and safety skills (USA), mountaineering (NIM,India), Superteaching (Aus), industrial rope-access and wilderness first aid . His working career spans 47 years and included teaching, port development, automobiles and the insurance industry. He was involved in startups and turnarounds of Saab and Renault in Singapore and Porsche ,Saab, Jaguar and Austin-Rover in Negara Brunei Darussalam. He was also training director for the highest performing sales division of Prudential Insurance.

As one of the pioneering trainers to use ropes courses and experiential learning for the training of youths and professional adults he has worked with a very broad range multi-national corporations,local enterprises as well as the Singapore government. Many of Singapore's leaders, top civil servants, heads of armed forces, judiciary and police chiefs, diplomats and directors of government-linked companies have attended his workshops and critiqued very favourably. His ropes course has an accident-free record in all the 18 years of operation.He was also on the external faculty of the General Electric Management School (Crotonville) and helped facilitate 13 Experienced Managers Programs in many parts of the world including Brazil, Germany, Australia, China, Bahrain and the Asean region.

In the past 5 years, his voluntary work has brought him to Chiangmai, where he helped facilitate workshops for organisations like Grace International School ,Church of Christ in Thailand and Rajamangla University of Technology Lanna. His interests include restoration of classic cars, mountaineering, free-fall parachuting, photography, horticulture, antiques and motorbiking. He also undertakes counselling at the Singapore Armed Forces Military Police Command detention barracks.

For his contribution to youth development work he was awarded the Public Service Medal in 1994.
